beginnings

Nelson Dale Hostetler is a native of Halfway, MO, born Sept. 4, 1975. Completing 8 years of education at Prairie Grove School. As a teenager he started working in his uncles Steel Truss Shop (Hostetler Sales) learning the trade of welding. Welding on trusses and any other item needing fixing: trucks, skid steers, making forks for skid steers, or anything anyone needed fixing.

In October of 1994 (age 19) Nelson bought a 40 acre farm southeast of Buffalo, MO, being interested in starting in the dairy business. The farm had a 3-by-pass milking barn on it. In March of 1995 Nelson married Rose Marie Swartzentruber. Rose was a farm girl and pitched right in and helped with the chores – after a four week wedding trip!

At this farm we milked around 30 cows. In 1996 we built a feeding floor to feed the cows more efficiently. Nelson kept his job at Hostetler Sales all this time; 14 years working 30-40 hours a week besides the dairy. In October 1997 we sold our farm and bought an 84 acre dairy farm close to Louisburg, MO. This farm had a double 6 harringbone, greatly improving our milking facilities.

Four years later we built a 40x78 hay barn with a 15 foot overhang and feeding floor. We have been adding to our herd over the years and are milking 94 cows at this time. We raise all our heifer calves and sell the bulls. In 2002 we bought an additional 35 acres adjoin ours and in 2006 we added another 39 acres.

During this time we bought a Jaylor mixer wagon to mix our own feed and built 3 commodity bays onto the hay barn. In 2007 we started raising our own corn for corn silage. We have been milking 17 years now and in 2011 we bought 6 registered cows to enter into the registered business ( a long time dream for Nelson)! We are also working on identifying our herd. We are in the process of building a 100 cow freestall barn.

Our Nel-Rose prefix was established in June 2011. Over the years we have been blessed with 2 wonderful daughters, Stephanie Jo – 13 and Nicole Dawn – 6, and praise the Lord a son Dalison Jade – 3. We are all very much involved in our dairy farm, and we think it's a wonderful way of life.
